Pamela brown is a writer and part time anchor for CNN. As the resident Trump correspondent, she has written and produced around 10 articles and videos surrounding our current president and his many controversies. Like most political analysts, her titles are extremely straightforward and in most cases cover the entire subject in seven words or less. However, she specifically has a method of using a topic sentence from within the article and turning it into a fitting title for the entire piece. Some of her titles include, “Exclusive: Trump begins informal prep for potential Mueller interview”, an article named “Special counsel team met with Trump lawyers on day of Cohen raid”, and “ FBI raid targeted records of payments to porn star, ex-Playmate”. I can assume that she uses such concise titles to let the readers know exactly what they are about to read and to appear free of personal political biases as the common theme among all of her articles is the Trump Presidency, a touchy subject for most citizens. Based off of her simple word choice and the shorter length of her articles, her audience appears to be the average busy American who would like to keep up with politics. Brown consistently appeals to logos within her articles to support her claims. For example, in her article titled, “ FBI raid targeted records of payments to porn star, ex-Playmate” she appealed to logos by mentioning a 150.000 dollar payment to Mcdougal to silence her in a ‘catch and kill’ tactic among the news industry. Explaining that it was legally binding Mcdougal to keep her mouth shut about Trump’s affairs. Bown had all of the dates and times of the alleged affair as a way to provide specific data for her audience-- allowing them to follow her logical train of thought among the controversy. She also provided the specific name of the company responsible for the pay off known as “American Media Inc”. Her appeals through ethos are used in every article by getting sources, information, and back up for her claims through trusted sources-- many of whom have direct insight on the topic. Throughout the article, “ FBI raid targeted records of payments to porn star, ex-Playmate”, she referred to articles by the Wall Street Journal, quotes from ex-porn star Stormy Daniels, and the story from McDougal herself. Having these credible sources among her article not only reinforces her own credibility but also helps her appear bias free. Although she presented information to support her claims of a payoff deal among the American Media Inc she includes a quote from them saying, “ A corporate spokesman for American Media Inc. provided a statement to CNN in response to the suit last month, saying McDougal ‘has been free to respond to press inquiries about her relationship with President Trump since 2016’ and that the company had not ‘silenced her”. This allows the reader to be exposed to a contradictory opinion and to have the information to make a decision on their own.
Brown uses an appropriate informative tone and simple diction in her articles. Based off of what I read, she appeals to the masses writings brief articles that are easy to understand and quick to read during any busy day. Her diction includes words that are no more complicated than ‘inclusion’, ‘ warrant’, and ‘spokesman’ and had a tone that was strictly bias free. Overall she did a great job presenting the information to her audience and delivered the information in a concise and respectful way-- to all who were involved.
