Julia Jones is an award winning international columnist for CNN. As a news gatherer, she has a predominant focus on Latin America, Canada, and France. Since Joining CNN in 2015, she has written nearly 30 articles such as,“‘one big mass grave’: More than 250 human skulls found in Mexico” and “Quebec mosque shooting: 'Lone wolf' kills 6, officials say”. Her titles do a great job of summarizing the piece by including both the location as well as the people involved in the incident. Based off of her simple diction and short articles, it can be assumed that her intended audience is the average adult American that keeps up with international news.
Jones appeals strongly to Ethos within her articles. She relies on first hand accounts and uses information from credible sources and witnesses to the event. For example, in the Quebec shooting, she used accounts from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the province's premier Philippe Couillard, and statements from the Islamic Cultural Center’s social media pages. She solidified her information by going to the scene herself and interviewing members of the community and family of the victims during the days following the attack to get as much information as possible. Her use of credible sources, verified twitter accounts, and first hand witnesses prove that her article relies on truth and contains information from a variety of perspectives, eliminating as much bias as possible.
In addition, Jones appeals to Logos to solidify her articles. In the article, “Amid chaos in Venezuela, infant deaths, malaria cases skyrocket”, the author uses statistics and data from the country’s health care system to make a point about their dire decisions. One statistic that she used stated that, “Confirmed malaria cases in 2016 stood at 240,000, a 76% increase over 2015”. She then supported it with other statistics discussing how in June of 2016, the country was already facing a shortage of more than 80% of the medicines doctors need. These statistics paired with visual tools help make the reader understand the situation using logical reasoning and deduction. The author’s tone is often seldom and critical as the topics that she covers tend to be tragedies or upsetting events. Her diction can be described as simple and and straightforward as it is easy for anyone to understand without a higher level of education. Overall, she does a great job at delivering information from across the world in both a concise and credible way.
